Galaxy merging , the Fundamental Plane of elliptical galaxies , and the M BH - σ 0 relation
We explore the effects of dissipationless merging on the Fundamental Plane of elliptical galaxies by using a N-body code based on a new, high performance numerical scheme (Dehnen 2002). We investigate the two extreme cases of galaxy growth by equal mass merging and accretion of small stellar systems; in a subset of simulations we also consider the presence of dark matter halos around the mergin...
متن کاملThe Fundamental Plane of Cluster Elliptical Galaxies
Using deep Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys imaging and Very Large Telescope FOcal Reducer/low dispersion Spectrograph 2 spectra, we determined the velocity dispersions, effective radii, and surface brightnesses for four early-type galaxies in the cluster RDCS 1252.9 2927. All four galaxies are massive, z p 1.237 greater than . These four galaxies, combined with three from RDC...
متن کاملThe relation between the virial theorem and the fundamental plane of elliptical galaxies
The analysis of the properties of a sample of elliptical galaxies for which the kinetic energy of both random and rotational motions are consistently defined, shows that more than half of the so-called ‘tilt’ of the fundamental plane of elliptical galaxies is accounted for by the non-homology in the dynamical structure of the systems. We find that the kinetic energy of random motions is proport...
متن کاملNear-Infrared Fundamental Plane of Elliptical Galaxies
Near-infrared (2.2 μm) observations of a sample of 48 elliptical galaxies in the Coma cluster have been carried out and used to study the near-ir fundamental plane (FP) of ellipticals in this cluster. An rms scatter of 0.072 dex was found for this relation, similar to that of its optical counterpart, using the same sample of galaxies. This corresponds to an uncertainty of 18% in distances to in...
متن کاملMOND and the fundamental plane of elliptical galaxies
It is shown that the MOdified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) explains the tilt of the fundamental plane of elliptical galaxies without the need of non-baryonic dark matter. Results found for elliptical galaxies extends to globular clusters and galaxy clusters, showing that MOND agrees with observations over 7 order of magnitude in acceleration.
